Album Review: Two Banks Of Four - Three Street Worlds (Red Egyptian Jazz)
Reviewer: Marcos Moret
Three Street Worlds is a soulful tour de force from the duo of Demus (who has produced for a long list of luminaries
including Zero 7 and IG Culture), and Rob Gallagher (of acid jazz demigods Galliano and aka the vaudevillian Earl
Zinger). Musically indebted to the jazz-dance and soul-jazz sounds of the likes of Strata East Records, there are also
instances of the more folksy, downtempo sound previously glimpsed on Zinger’s Set Your Phasers on Stun…. And the
musicianship is exemplary throughout, including the likes of Chris Bowden, Bembe Seque, Paul Jason Fredericks, and Ski
Oakenfull. One Day is a swinging soul-jazz number with lolloping bass and wonderful forward-looking vocals from
Valerie Etienne (pictured, prior to the recent birth of baby Jared with Gallagher). Banks Of The Nile is a firin’ jazz-dance piece that would fit in nicely to a Messin’ Around session,
replete with soaring flute, sax, and again the vocal talents of Etienne. Unclaimed is a deeply beautiful and
touchingly humanistic ode to the progress of people’s lives and the passing of time. And the title track boasts a wickedly
unconventional drum pattern, ethereal manipulated vocals, and synths remeniscent of some the broken beat scene’s finest
moments. Essential.
