Album Review: Agent K - Feed The Cat (Giant Step Records)

Reviewer: Marcos Moret

Feed The Cat album cover Agent K, aka Kaidi Tatham, is – as anyone who knows the scene will tell you – one of broken beat’s leading lights, with credits (whether as producer or musician) on work from luminaries including Neon Phusion, Likwid Bizkit, Donnie, and 4 Hero. This, his ‘solo’ debut, was released in the UK over a year ago, and now sees a US release. A note to the uninitiated: this is jazz fusion music given a 21st century work-over, the kind of music that fits in perfectly between Herbie Hancock and 4 Hero on your CD rotator. The album resounds with soul, funk, jazz, and other afro-Diasporic influences, subtly meshed with a connoisseur’s understanding of the past 20 years of British rare groove-influenced and breaks-driven sounds. Orbit is space funk that a Thrust-era Herbie would have been proud of. Feed the Cat is an optimistic boogie tune with laid-back, playful vocals and a whole lotta bounce to the ounce. Rideaway Getaway is a staccato-yet-warm broken groove featuring the uplifting vocals of Carleen Anderson (DJ Spinna and Blaze remixes also appear). And we haven’t even mentioned the three best-known (and possibly strongest) songs on the album: Ladies, Betcha, and Armz R Deh. Sublime.
