Album Review: Alison Crockett - On Becoming a Woman (Sol Image) Writer: Ike Ikwuemesi
Alison Crockett’s On Becoming A Woman… is a steely debut from a talent that had hitherto only been recognized by her crowning guest appearances on other acts’ projects. Her most impressive output, under the moniker Diva Blue, had been on King Britt’s seriously funky classic When The Funk Hits the Fan on which Crockett’s vocals emerge refined and reminiscent of the blues/jazz divas of yesteryear. On Becoming A Woman..., not before time, spotlights singer/songwriter Alison Crockett in her own urbane incarnation, which follows a sophisticated yet organic vein. Save Me is the opener that gets you to stop, feel and listen to this album from beginning to end. The album allows you to enjoy Crockett’s experience of becoming a woman. via hemes of affection, self-belief and self-love. Tracks that undoubtedly step up to the plate include U R which has already been given the rinse cycle treatment by London producers Yam Who? I’m Gonna Come is also a treat, but Alive runs away with the “reason to check out this album“ prize. It’s a chilled out finders’ keepers of a tune that rides on a throttling broken beat vibe. As of writing, 2004 has yet to drop a truly soulful album with no fillers (and no, Jill Scott‘s album hasn't been released yet). Thankfully, Crockett’s On Becoming A Woman… helps to fill that void.
