Review: DJ Marky - Bingo Sessions Volume 2 (Bingo Beats)
Writer: Damian Platt
When I was a cheesy quaver I used to have a theory,
circa 1993, as hardcore speeded up into what was to become jungle
techno, then drum and bass, that the music they were playing at
raves was no more than a commodity designed to bring people up,
carry them through their "rush" and then dump them somewhere
the other side. Unless you decided to pop another one, that is.
I used to put this theory into practice most weekends, and was reminded
of this experimental period of my life as a noise sounding like
a laser cannon fired by the Emperor himself cut into my living room
during track 15 of this compilation - a mean joint called Siren
Back then this would have incited me to climb on top of the nearest
platform and practice doing karate chops into the lasers. As a creaky
thirty something I resisted the urge to climb up on top of the kitchen
table, but did have a little bounce around.
This compilation, masterfully mixed, cut, scratch
n' blended by DJ Marky, features a wide range
of what is drum n bass in 2005 - vocal rollers (Movin'
On by A.I. Together by Logistics), thumping jump ups
and a good smattering of the distinctive Bingo bass lines. For the
old school there is an even MC who comes on bantering about Bumba
Clarts in one of the tracks. Marcus Intalex, Shy FX and Zinc all
feature, as do several pieces actually produced by men like Marky
and XRS themselves. Not what I would call my regular cup of Tetley
any more, but definitely a must for the modern drum and bass crew.
If anyone wants to know where it's at these days, then check this
out...
