1) PHIL ASHER presents FOCUS - SWEET AND SOUR (Restless Soul LP)
Lovely selection of broken beats and soulful boogie stuff. My favourite has is definitely 'Having Your Fun', and uplifting
piece of gospel-tinged RnB, London-style.
2) US3 - GET OUT (REMIXES) (Universal Jazz 12")
The Truby Trio Mix is decent, but it was for the Afronaought Mix that I bought this - Orin Walters delivering the goods
again, with Kaidi Tatham doing the do on keys and drums. Transcendental, urgent, powerful - the verbs spew out but somehow
don't quite manage to sum up how amazing this song really is.

3) CO REAL ARTISTS - WHAT ABOUT YOU (IN THE WORLD TODAY) (Stones Throw 12")
Originally recorded in 1974, this slice of funk involves some fly ancient-school rapping which pre-dates "King Tim III" and
"Rappers Delight" by at least 5 years, and was originally put together as part of a community production funded by the
National Endowment For The Arts.
Buy
4) SHAUN ESCOFFERY - LET IT GO (JAZZANOVA MIXES 12") (Oyster)
Shaun Escoffery is a real singing talent as anyone who checked him down at Blacktronica a while back will attest. Jazzanova
turn it into an ethereal soulful house-verging-on-broken-beat track, with wicked piano and optimistic strings raising the
atmosphere to fever-pitch levels.
5) PEVEN EVERETT - STUDIO CONFESSIONS (Genuine LP)
Wicked and much-anticipated soulful stylings.
Buy
6) VIKTER DUPLAIX - LOOKING FOR LOVE (Hollywood 12")
Taken from his recent album "International Affairs", Philly's Duplaix supplements Marc Mac's original with new Bugz In The Attic
and Nature's Plan mixes. The Bugz mix is excellent, with some serious speaker-blowing bass and a trademark broken beat bounce
which has been going down a storm at Co-Op.
Buy
7) NAS - GOD'S SON (Columbia 12")
A return to form from Nasir Jones. You may well have heard three of the best tunes already - the James Brown-sampling "Get
Down", "Made You Look", and "I Can".
Buy
8) MADDSLINKY - CARGO b/w RISE ABOVE IT (Laws Of Motion 12")
Dave Jones aka Zed Bias aka Maddslinky hits us with "Cargo", a nice uptempo evolution on 2 step, and "Rise Above It", a tasty
funk/boogie tune.
9) BOUGIE SOLITERRE - SIMPLE THINGS (Flipside LP)
Montreal's Bettina Costanzo comes with a great soulful house excursion with the Bugz crew, including Daz-I-Kue, Orin Walters,
Kaidi Tatham, and Phil Asher all getting in on the action.
