Fertile Ground FERTILE GROUND - SEASON'S CHANGE REMIXED (Counterpoint LP)
Season’s Change was a wicked album, still in our record boxes to this day. It features a collection of wondrously uplifting contemporary soul music courtesy of this Baltimore ensemble. This remix album sees some very tasty re-workings. Highlights include Kaidi Tatham’s subtle remix of ‘Spiritual War’ (introducing that broken vibe), FG’s Afrobeat version of ‘Illumination’, the swirling and carnivalesque Jazztronik remix of ‘Peace and Love’, Seiji’s remix of ‘The Moment’, and Waiwan’s chilled DnB working of ‘Take Me Higher’. Buy

Wunmi BUGZ IN THE ATTIC feat. WUNMI - ZOMBIE (Bitasweet 12")
Zombie, oh, zombie!!!!! Taken from the 'Red Hot and Riot' compilation, record shops around London breathed a collective sigh of relief as this track finally hit the streets. A fantastic rendition of Fela Kuti's classic, this is a dancefloor killer. Wicked beats, and the trademark Bugz in the Attic slickness. "Bugz in the Attic - collect no static!" Buy Album

Monica Vasconcelos MONICA VASCONCELOS & NOIS - OFERENDA (Candid LP)
Brazilian loveliness from Paulista Vasconcelos. Whether singing over bossas, MPB, samba, or the range of other funky rhythms on this album, her voice sounds as seductive as a caipirinha shared with a Brazilian lover on a moonlit Bahian beach, on a warm summer’s night. Buy

Q-Tip
SEIJI / Q-TIP - LOOSE TIPS (White 12")
Breathe and Stop speeded up and played over the top of Loose Lips. Guaranteed floor destroyer. Amazing hip hop / broken beat bootleg. Find under the counter near you - quickly!

Jazz Bizniz 3 JAZZ BIZNIZ 3 (Counterpoint LP)
From the chilled out funk of Frank Walton’s ‘Safari’ from 1979 to the soulful rare groove stylings of General Lee’s ‘We Did It Baby (Pt.1), this album of obscure jazz-tinged tracks is a gem from start to finish. Covering many shades of the jazz-funk spectrum, other highlights include Marva Broome’s ‘Mystifying Mama’ featuring the Arts Ensemble of Chicago and some signature squawking (oh yeah!), Olu Butterfly Woods’ superb spoken word-over-downtempo-swinging-jazz number, and Tata Vasquez’s ‘Suite Guaracho Part II, a fine piece of Nu-Yorican niceness on an Afro-Cuban tip. Buy

MC Pitman
MC PITMAN - IT TAKES TEA (My Arse UK 7")
You know him but this time it's the turn of Rob Base abd DJ E-Z Rock's classic tht gets the inimitable Pitman rub. Buy

RIMA RIMA - THIS WORLD (Jazzanova-Compost LP)
RIMA is England’s broken beat stalwart Dominic Stanton (Domu, Sonar Circle) and Enrico Crivellaro (Volcov). With this, their debut outing, they explore their shared love for jazz funk (‘Modern Times’, featuring Ian O’Brien, and ‘Vidigal’ featuring The collective Unconscious), coming across like a mix between Weather Report and Headhunters). There are also some tracks that veer towards techno and hard house territory. But our favourites are the broken beat and soulful house numbers, namely ‘Rivers’ (featuring Mark De Clive Lowe and Anna Stubbs), ‘Let It Go’ (featuring Julie Dexter), This World (featuring Nicola Kramer), and the Portuguese-language ‘O Vento Dira’ (featuring Cida De Assis). Buy

Ive Mendes IVE MENDES - NAO VOU FUGIR (DJ MARKY & XRS MAINLINE MIX) (12")
Fresh from ripping up the charts Marky returns with this summery drum 'n' bass workout of one of the tracks from one mr Bongo's latest artists, the beautifull British-based Brazilian Ive Mendes. Buy Album

Izzi Dunn IZZI DUNN - FIRE REMIXES (FireWorX 12")
Featuring remixes from Restless Soul, Unsung Heroes, and the original mix from Kaidi Tatham, it’s the Afronaught mix that really does it for us – a broken beat treatment of the highest order. Blend those distinctively powerful vocals with those trademark vocals and you know you need this.

What's Going On MARVIN GAYE - WHAT'S GOING ON (Tamla LP)
So relevant right now, we fished this one out and rediscovered an absolute classic. What’s Going On, What’s Happening Brother, Flying High, Mercy Mercy Me – sweet soul music with a serious anti-war and state of humanity side. Buy

Macy Gray MACY GRAY - WHEN I SEE YOU (BUGZ IN THE ATTIC REMIX) (Urban Division 12")
Another tune from the very talented Bugz stable. Perhaps this will give them some more recognition from the mainstream. An upbeat, bouncy fun-loving (B-Funk!) version of Macy Gray's hit, gives the listener plenty to smile about! Buy

Dego KAIDI TATHAM AND DEGO (4 HERO) - GOT ME PUZZLED (2000 Black 12").
Sometimes a piece of music catches the essence of a time almost perfectly. To us, anyway, this track sums up a lot of the feelings of frustration, confusion and optimism that form a part of living in the world today. A great song, one for the dancefloor, the car, the house, anywhere - we first heard this on the dancefloor at Co-Op and almost levitated with joy!

O Rappa O RAPPA - LADO B / LADO A (Warner Brasil LP)
Thanks to friends in São Paulo (Big up Marina!) this CD is getting heavy play from the Know The Ledge massive. Arguably one of the most important sounds coming out of Rio de Janeiro today is that of O Rappa. This CD, issued by Warner Brasil in 1999 is the best example of their work. Energy is not the word! Moving, powerful music that has rock, reggae, hip hop and of course, all sorts of traditional Brazilian influences. If you can get your hands on a copy of the multimedia CD, then you are in for a treat, as it has the videos for two tracks which were made by co-producer of City of God, Katia Lund. Beautiful, searing stuff. They have recently been in the studio with Asian Dub Foundation.

Raphael Saadiq
RAPHAEL SAADIQ - SKY'S THE LIMIT (YAM WHO'S SPIRITUAL REWORK 12") (Yam 12")
Out now in London record shops this sublime track is a must-have for fans of nu-soul. One for the lovers, features an amazing intro leading into a vocal duet. 7 minutes of bliss.

Somatik SOMATIK - REFLECTIONS OF THE FUTURE B/W INTERAKTION (Twisted Funk 12")
If you want to know where it's gonna be then buy, beg, borrow or steal a copy of this. Not since the early days of V and Good Looking have we picked up a double A side 12" with two such distinctive and groundbreaking tracks. As to be expected, London NW2 taking it to the next level!

Keziah Jones KEZIAH JONES - BLACK ORPHEUS (Delabel LP)
Ths guy has worked with Z-Star and has featured at Backtronica nights and worked with the Amplified Crew. Wicked mix of afrobeaty rocky-soul. Think this album will do some damage.
