1) VARIOUS - SCATTERED SNARES (Twisted Funk LP)
Top-notch and hard-hitting broken beats from Moonstarr, Nubian Mindz et al., compiled by 4 Hero's Marc Mac.
Buy
2) MINNIE RIPERTON - LES FLEURS ANTHOLOGY (Stateside LP)
This one came out last year, but only just picked it up - beautiful, warm, and funky soul music including
the original versions of the 4 Hero favourites 'I am the Black Gold of the Sun' and 'Les Fleur'.
Buy
3) DRUMAGICK - EASY BOOM (SambaLoco 12")
Brazilian drum 'n' bass with wonderful female vocals, funky intro, samba interludes, and a bassline guaranteed
to destroy dancefloors. Appears also on Gilles Peterson's World Wide 2 compilation.
Buy
4) THE POPCORN BROTHERS - POPCORN TRAIN (King A Ling 7")
A very funky little tune from Yvan (Hoxton Selecta) and Liam Watson (producer of The White Stripes) and
featuring Lenny Parker on vocals. Copies from Hoxton Selecta Record shop - call 020 7613 3384 or 07949 161002.
5) VARIOUS - ALEX ATTIAS presents THE CHROMATIC UNIVERSE (Visions LP)
Soulful broken beats compiled by London-based Swiss DJ Attias, featuring the talents of Son of Scientist,
Plutonia, Vanessa Freeman etc.
Buy
6) MASTERS AT WORK feat. ROY AYERS - OUR TIME IS COMING (JAZZANOVA GUESTLIST REMIX) (MAW Records 12")
MAW and Roy Ayers AND Jazzanova? With this combination of talents, a sign that this might be a pretty good
tune if ever there was one. 'I live in Brooklyn'-esque keyboards, Ayers' vibes and vocals, and
Jazzanova's stuterring funk treatment, equal dancefloor carnage.
7) VARIOUS - 2000 BLACK presents THE GOOD GOOD VOL. 2 (2000 Black LP)
More broken beat positivity, featuring the niceness of Mark de Clive-Lowe, Abdul Shyllon, Domu, Da One Away,
Bembe Segue, and Restless Soul.
8) JORGE BEN - BRAZILIAN HITS AND FUNKY CLASSICS (Manteca 12")
Came out a while back, but hey, I'm trying! If you want a funky Brazilian album this is it. Listen and be
transported to the carefree sunshine of Copacabana and Ipanema. Nice liner notes from John Armstrong.
Buy
9) SEIJI - REMIXES (Bitasweet LP)
This has got to be THE month for broken beat albums. Bugz in the Attic member and Co-Op regular Seiji
comes with the goodness in the form of remixes of P'Taah, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Joakim Lone Octet, Dom Um
Romao, and others.
Buy
10) DEMACUSTICO - BRAZIL (Far Out 12")
Vocals-led batucada electronica Brasileira.
Buy
11) MOONSTARR - THE DUPONT REMIXES (Compost 12")
The Nu Era Remix of 'Workin Men's Hustle' is a great housey number incorporating a fair measure of rare groove and boogie
vibes. The original version Nu Era's Greed is a slab of electro-funk of the highest order, whilst Moonstarr's
own remix of Greed takes the track downtempo, and gives it a more organic sound.
Buy
12) PAULA LIMA - DIVA PAULISTA
Excellent album straight outta Sao Paulo, from the latin jazz of 'As Famosas Gargalhadas Do Yuka' to the
beautiful samba of 'E Isso Ai' to the uplifting funk of 'Quiero Ver Voce No Baile', it's all good.
Buy
13) KYOTO JAZZ MASSIVE - SUBSTREAM (Compost 12")
Brazilian-tinged nu jazz and housey vibes as Compost know best, including a couple of Afronaught remixes.
Buy
14) POLO MONTANEZ - GUITARRA MIA (Lusafrica LP)
Wonderfully poignant Cuban guajiro which is blowing up from Havana to Guantanamo.
15) MR. SCRUFF - TROUSER JAZZ (Ninja Tune LP)
Quirky and playful album of funky breaks and beats - the best of the lot is the space-disco stormer 'Shrimp'.
