Concert Review: Jaguar Wright - Jazz Cafe, London - 9 July 2005

Writer: David Aaron

Jaguar Wright, Jazz Cafe, 9 July 2005 The near packed-out crowd at London's Jazz Café were still bouncing from the performance of support act United Soul and their interpretation of Stevie Wonder's classic Higher Ground, when the sultry figure of Jaguar Wright, immaculately dressed in all black and a chic glittery headscarf, emerged at the top of the balcony, before making her grand entrance on stage.

In town to promote her sophomore album Divorcing Neo Soul 2 Marry Soul, the Philly songstress was greeted with genuine respect and applause from a knowledgeable crowd full of anticipation, before kicking off a night of impassioned, polished soul.

Effortlessly breezing through tracks from 2002's debut album Denial, Delusions & Decisions, standouts being, I Can't Wait (unfortunately no guest spot from Bilal), Patti LaBelle's classic Love Need and Want You and Country Song; Wright engaged her audience with a flawless vocal performance and rhetoric that wouldn't be misplaced on the comedy circuit.

Self Love and a spellbinding version of The Beatles' Come Together were poignantly orchestrated by the 28 year-old, as an acknowledgement and defiance to the atrocities that had taken place around the city only days earlier. Mixing the vocals of the spiritual heard on Moby's Natural Blues, over the deep baselines of the classic Lennon/McCartney track was arguably the highlight of the evening and a golden example of this young woman's artistry, that surely must see her propelled to the same heights as her Philly compatriot Jill Scott.

Amongst showcasing tracks from her new album such as the funky floor-filler Ecstacy, produced by Raphael Saadiq and first single Free, she managed to give props to Common and his Be record, before covering the Chicago rapper's The Light, to great applause.

Leaving MCA for Independent label, Artemis, is just the beginning of a bright future for a true soul star. London loves you Jaguar!
