Album Review: Jazzinho - Jazzinho (Ecco.Chamber)
Reviewer: Marcos Moret
Jazzinho’s self-titled debut album is a fine piece of Brazilian/jazz fusion. The London-based group is led by Guida de
Palma, who co-wrote and sings on all the songs. Having appeared on Kyoto Jazz Massive’s Shine, Nathan Haines’
Misterio, and Da Lata’s Golden (Christian Franck of said group co-wrote two of the songs here) , this is now
her time to prove her ability to stand on her own legs, and she does just that.
For example, Velejou (written by de Palma with Michele Chiavarini, who co-wrote all but four of the tracks with her)
is a funky little bossa with a whole lot of soul, replete with lush female backing vocals, de
Palma’s sweet singing in Portuguese, and great musicianship. On Sim Ou Nao, de Palma sings in both English and Portuguese - a happy, uptempo, piece of magical positivity, with
a flute-piano combo providing a dramatic framework. Turning into a frenetic workout towards the end, this will get any
dancefloor sweating. But for me, the highlight has to be Vertigo - a rolling piece of uptempo Latin jazz with
wonderfully uplifting vocals, a dramtically surging melody, and great musicianship including trumpet and piano solos.
Suffice to say, if you’re a fan of jazz-inflected Brazilian music, particular stuff like Da Lata
or the Blue Brazil compilations, then this is definitely one for you.
