Feature: Kaidi Tatham Q&A
Interviewer: Marcos Moret
Agent K, aka Kaidi Tatham, is – as anyone who knows the scene will tell you – one of broken beat’s leading lights,
with credits (whether as producer or musician) on work from luminaries including Neon Phusion, Likwid Bizkit,
Donnie, and 4 Hero. Feed The Cat, his ‘solo’ debut, was released in the UK over a year ago, and has just been released
in the US. We caught up with him for a quick chat. Read on...
Tell us about where you live and how it affects your musical outlook.
At the moment I live in Kentish Town in London. I used to live in
Acton, West London. In Acton i lived in a park, so i had a lot of inspiration, peace and quiet,
and no cars beeping. Ahhhh...but i dont think it has affected my musical
outlook.
How did you get into making music?
I started when i was 17 or 18 - jamming with friends in a
studio in Richmond, London. I started on flute, and I always wanted to play
keyboards - started to pick things up, as you do. Then The Herbaliser was born
and started touring. In the meantime I met Orin, Alex, Daz, and the rest is
history.
What's in your walkman/stereo at the moment?
In my stereo i have Mary Lou Willams - Zoning (1974).
Who are your musical influences?
I have a lot of influences. They are Herbie Hancock, Patrice Rushen, Charles
Stepney, Jean Carn, Earth Wind and Fire, Airto, A Tribe Called Quest, Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder...too many names.
What else are you into apart from music?
I dont do anything else...but i would like to teach music.
What do you like and dislike about London and New York?
I like London because everything is here. Whatever you want to do, its all
here. What I hate about london? Umm...people need to smile more, and chill
out. Too much jealously about...I have only been to New york one time and I loved it.
Where was your last trip abroad, and what were your impressions of that
country?
My last trip was France, a music festival with the Herbaliser.
It was very good - I love France...they have great food, fine wine, and they dress good.
Are you into art/design/illustration/multimedia/theatre/film at all? If so,
what stuff do you like?
My wife loves art, its not to bad, but its not my thing. I love films, going
to the cinema. It has been a while.
What equipment do you use to make your music?
I use fender rhodes electric piano mark 1 73, honer d6 clavinet roland
sh2000 yamaha cs-50, elka strings, korg ms 20, arp axe, mini moog, obx, korg
mono poly, arp pro soloist...I'm not saying anymore.
What are you working on musically/artistically right now?
I am working on a next album.
If you could have a dinner party with three people, alive or dead, who
would they be?
I would have dinner with Marvin Gaye, Herbie Hancock, and Patrice Rushen.
