Album Review: V/A - LOOP Select 004 (LOOP Recordings Aot(ear)oa)
Reviewer: Marcos Moret
New Zealand represent! LOOP Select 4 is a collection of fourteen tracks from some of the Antipodean isle’s top producers
and musicians. And it’s a very nice package indeed, with lush production and musical talent evident...
Kora’s Barely Can See is a RnB / hip hop number with the sexily French-accented female vocalist switching from
singing to rapping over the top of a nice acoustic guitar-led backing track. The Solephonic Remix of Che Fu’s (cool name!)
Fade Away is a breezy-yet-upliftingly-funky soul tune. Laden with nice syth and brass touches and underpinned by
an uptempo beat, it’s not dissimilar to Sunshine Anderson or Donnell Jones’ better moments.
At the other end of the spectrum there’s, for example, the dark drum n bass sounds of Dreadzone’s mix of Salmonella Dub’s
Wytaliba, a tune with a serious bassline and bound to test a few speakers. There’s the Paddy Free mix of
Dub Asylum’s What The Funk, another bassline-heavy beast - an electro-dub hybrid with female vocals and serious
dancefloor ambitions. And rising stars Fat Freddy’s Drop contribute Bluey, a lolloping, soulful, cinematic, piece
replete with jazzy bass, guitar, and piano tinklings, but more importantly a wonderfully evocative male vocal that brings
forth images of after-hours street life, NZ-style.
All in all, LOOP Select 004 is a strong compilation that confirms LOOP and Aotearoan music in general are to slept on at
one’s peril!
