Album Review: Lotek Hi-Fi - Lotek Hi-Fi (Big Dada)
Reviewer: Monica Runke
Lotek Hi-Fi's 30 minute eponymous album is described by their label Big Dada as "all killer no filler". And they’re right
- it is a fine showcase of the talents of Wayne Bennett, Earl J, Wayne Paul and Aurelius, and a warm up for next year's
release Mixed Blessings. The single Percolator is out now, so there's plenty of opportunity to get listening.
The style doesn't stand still, and this makes sense given Lotek's influences. Hip hop, reggae, dancehall, street soul and
deep dub all come together to create a slightly tripped-out bouncy skank. Percolator, Hey Yeh Yeh, and
Ah You Dat stand out as party tunes against the cooler blunted out dub sounds. The lyrics are great and Lotek Hi-Fi
stay true to the UK school by rhyming about PG Tips and parking on a double yellow line - although the vehicle in question
is a trojan horse.
There’s enough variety in their voices to keep the flow bubbling as they move through the musical spectrum and it feels
like there’ll be a lot more coming from Lotek that will give us a new take on life, tea and that thing under the bed.
