Feature: Mark de Clive-Lowe Q&A
Interviewer: Marcos Moret
New Zealand born, London-based Mark de Clive-Lowe is a key player on the nu jazz and broken beat scene. He's lent his
considerable keyboard and production skills to projects
with everyone from 4 Hero to DJ Spinna, and having released his debut album Six Degrees in 2000, he's now working on his
sophomore album. He very kindly took a few minutes out of his hectic schedule (which now includes the responsibilities
of fatherhood) to answer a few quick-fire questions for Know The Ledge.
Tell us about where you live and how it affects your musical outlook.
I live in West London - it's a huge melting pot of influences and vibes and
there's always something totally fresh going on.
How did you get into making music?
I've been playing music all my life - piano since I was 4.
What's in your walkman/stereo at the moment?
Doug Carn - Revelation, Patrice Rushen - Before The Dawn, Amp Fiddler.
Who are your musical influences?
Too many to name but some key ones are Miles, Herbie, George Duke, Patrice,
all the West London crew, Afro-Cuban, Stevie, Quincy...
What else are you into apart from music?
My family, travel, good food, good surrounds.
What do you like and dislike about London and New York?
I just miss the quality of life and natural surrounds of New Zealand
sometimes.
Where was your last trip abroad, and what were your impressions of that
country?
Amsterdam last weekend - smokey!
Are you into art/design/illustration/multimedia/theatre/film at all? If so,
what stuff do you like?
Anything that comes with an original twist and flavour.
What equipment do you use to make your music?
G4, Logic 5.5, MPC3000, Rhodes Mark II, Korg MS-2000, Arp Omni 2, Juno 6, and
a few other toys!
What are you working on musically right now?
My new album's coming on slowly, surely :) . I've also been working on a new live band project that IG's put
together. It's crazy twisted soul music, all incredible musicians and singers - great to do the full live band thing again.
If you could have a dinner party with any two people, who would they be?
Me, my wife and my son :)
