Review: Various Artists - Nu Brazil 2 (Manteca )
Writer : Xantoné Blacq
Brazil
has long been acknowledged as one of the world’s leading musical
nations and on the evidence of this double CD it is clear that they
are not ready to rest on their laurels. Regular listeners to “classic”
Brazilian music will have grown hale and hearty on a diet of tender,
sinuous melodies and harmonies from Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius
de Moraes, Joyce and their contemporaries. Others may have tuned in
later to the electric rumblings of Azymuth, Airto Moreira and OPA.
The music on these CDs holds a kinship with the
“classic” music listed above but definitely has its
own identity. This is the sound of “young Brazil”, electric,
driven, proud and free. Samba meets drum n bass, choro
meets funk and milonga meets 4-to-the-floor. Heavily compressed
drum beats, choppy rhythm guitar and punchy bass lines feature throughout
these CDs, and yet there’s so much more.
Check out Siri's No Tranco, a track built around the sound
of a car engine starting and choking, or the self-titlled Pagode Jazz Sardinha’s
Club which should be loved by jazzoids all over. Acid X's Uma Geral is
semi-acoustic drum n bass with some of the sweetest
vocals you will find on the album, while Orientaçao by Tuzé De Abreu is a
mixture of the strange, pure and breathtakingly beautiful. This
is a CD filled with open-minded music for open-minded listeners.
Open your ears and enjoy!
