Album Review: Paula Lima - Diva Paulista (Mr. Bongo)
Reviewer: Pablo Navarrete
Hailed as Brazil’s first R&B diva, São Paulo-based Paula Lima’s international debut solo album is an intoxicating blend of
samba, funk, soul and jazz, and rocks from start to finish. Given an international re-release by Brighton-based Mr Bongo
records, ‘Diva Paulista’ contains 9 of the 13 tracks from Lima’s debut solo effort, ‘É Isso AÍ’, and includes remixes from
the likes of Anderson Soares (one of Brazil’s top house DJ’s).
Part of the Brazilian soul-funk scene since 1992 when, as a law student, she joined the dance-music-attitude group “Unidade
Móvel”, Paula believes everything has its moment in life. “I could have released a solo album before”, she claims. Well,
it looks like the wait has been well worth it as this funky samba-soul gem contains tracks from the cream of new Brazilian
talent, such as Ed Motta and Seu Jorge.
Produced by the much-hyped Max de Castro, the album opens with the boisterously funky ‘Quero Ver Você No Baile’ and
proceeds to show an incredible range of styles, including the wicked jazz-dance grooves of ‘As Famosas Gargalhadas Do
Yuka’. My favourite track though has to be ‘É Tâo Bom’, where Paula lets rip with 100% pure Brazilian soul. And that’s
essentially what this album’s all about; quality soul music with Portugese lyrics. It doesn’t get much better than this.
If you like the sound of this this you should also check out Seu Jorge's 'Carolina' album on Mr. Bongo
