Album Review: A Race Of Angels - Broadcast No. 1 (Luv Classics)
Writer: Priscilla Owusu
A Race Of Angels' debut release is not your run of the mill soul music. A mixture of folk and soul driven heavily by synthesizers and string instruments, broadcast no.1 creates a unique sound that delights in not conforming to any kind of definition or label.
The opening track, Golden, is both welcoming and uplifting with great vocals. As is Afrika Displaced a beautiful, haunting acoustic guitar-led track that takes you back to the sun-scorched skies of Africa, and is worthy of a press of the repeat button. Unfortunately, for me, the rest of the album is let down by the repetitive sound of the synthesizer which jars competitively with the soulful vocals on tracks like We and Michael & The Force. On one level, this works wonderfully as it allows the music to resist the boundaries of genre and take you on a journey of experimental sounds and spaced-out echoes, but on the other hand you just long for something a little more peaceful and mellow without the crash and smash of the synth.
Having said that, it's not bad album, but one that you have to listen to yourself and make your own mind up about it. The message is one of love and peace which, lets face it, in this present climate needs to be shouted from the rooftops and A Race Of Angels do their utmost to get that message across. If eclectic experimental synthesized sounds is your cup of tea, then go for it, but if you like your soul music slightly more conventional, then save yourself the trouble and give this one a miss.
